How sanctions screening works

  1. 1

    Search the name

Enter the person or company. Every list is searched at once, and spelling variants, transliterations and reversed word order still match.

  2. 2

    Review any match

A match is a possible hit, not a finding. Compare the date of birth, nationality, address and aliases on the entry with what you know about your customer.

  3. 3

    Keep the record

Buy the PDF for one search, or use a plan to record every search, screen CSV files and re-screen saved names every day.

Sanctions screening and AML screening

Sanctions screening is one part of AML screening

AML screening usually means sanctions screening plus checks for politically exposed persons (PEPs) and adverse media. OFACScreen covers the sanctions and export-control lists. It does not screen PEP lists or news.

No tool is prescribed

OFAC does not require a particular screening tool. It expects a program that fits your risk, and a record of each check is how you show you ran it.

Screen again when the lists change

A customer who was clear at onboarding can be listed later. On a plan, the names you save are re-screened against the updated lists every day, with an email when one matches.

The program

Run a screening program

  • Names you save are re-screened against all 14 lists every day, with an email alert when one matches
  • Batch CSV, the REST API, and team seats on every tier

14 days, no card.

The exception

One screening, one record

Questions

Checking a person or company against government sanctions lists before you deal with them, because a match can mean a payment or a sale is prohibited. Most businesses screen customers at onboarding and before a payment, and screen suppliers before paying them.
Sanctions screening checks names against sanctions lists, where a match can mean a transaction is prohibited. AML screening is the wider anti-money-laundering check, which usually adds politically exposed persons (PEPs) and adverse media. OFACScreen does the sanctions and export-control part only.
Yes. The search on this page is free and needs no account, up to 25 searches a day from one IP address. It shows scored matches on screen and keeps nothing. If you need the check on file, the PDF record of one search is $9.99.
For a US business, OFAC's lists come first. If you trade abroad or your customers do, the UN, EU and UK lists matter too, and exporters also need the Commerce and State Department lists. One search here covers all 14: OFAC SDN, OFAC Non-SDN, EU Financial Sanctions, UN Security Council, UK Sanctions List, Canada SEMA, Swiss SECO, Australia DFAT, BIS Denied Persons, BIS Entity List, BIS Unverified List, BIS Military End-User, ITAR Debarred and State Nonproliferation.
Whenever the lists change, because that is when a customer you cleared can become a match. A plan does this for you: saved names are re-screened every day. Our guide on how often to re-screen covers the details.
It is a record that you searched named lists at a stated time and what came back. It is not legal advice, and it does not replace the checks and records your own obligations require.
